AVONDALE RESIDENTS CAN NOW RECYCLE #1-#7 PLASTICS EXCEPT FOR FOAM PRODUCTS (#6)!

Why does Avondale recycle?

The 1999 Citizen Satisfaction Survey showed that a majority of Avondale residents wanted the City to provide curbside recycling services.  Avondale began its recycling program in January 2003.  Residents received once-a-week garbage service in the black container and once-a-week recycling service in the blue container.

It's no secret that landfill space is limited and becoming difficult to develop and maintain.  Recycled materials are removed from the waste stream instead of being dumped in a landfill, extending the life of the facilities currently in use.

Another important benefit of recycling is that recycling discard commodities spares raw materials from being consumed as quickly.  Paper and aluminum are good examples of this: using post-consumer paper waste in the manufacturing of new paper reduces the number of trees needed to produce the same amount of paper; recycling used aluminum cans into new ones not only spared land from mining, it is actually cheaper than manufacturing cans from raw ore.
